Sometimes I wonder if the improvements in technology, or, to be specific, the invention of mobile phones has caused human beings to be less conscious about the issue of latecoming. In the past, without the presence of mobile phones, people had to be punctual if not the other party would be left in a sea of confusion. But now, with mobile phones, people often carry this attitude of "aiya, just call him and say I'll be late".
Has anyone ever wondered it's not just a point of whether people worry for you, but also a responsiility and more importantly, it is an extremely important form of courtesy. A time wouldn't be set in the first place if both parties are set to wait for each other to arrive. Similarly, a time is set so both can meet up and hold whatever activities they planned. It gets irritating when people are late, everything gets delayed and then you're late for yet another activity.
If one is late and has informed the other party on an earlier basis, especially when an activity is held on a group basis, to me, it is forgivable. But if one is late just because the bus was late, because s/he underestimated his/her own preparation time, then i would say it is a lame excuse. All these ought to be included in the "time estimated for one to prepare so I can reach there in time".
Being late causes other people to nurture this bad habit in them as well. Because they will always have this attitude, thinking, "since the other party will be late, then it's okay if I'm late for a little while too", and everyone is late. Say, a group planned to watch a 245 movie and planned to meet at 2 at the nearest mrt station, everyone is late, tickets are sold out, there goes everything.
In short, latecoming is
bad. lol. okay. TATA!
